What is the secret to a green lawn?

I live in Montana, it can get quite dry but it’s not desert. Are there alternatives to watering?

When I got our house there were weeds everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE, it was a foreclosure and there were about 400+ dandelions. They are all dead now and it’s just grass. I would like to turn it into the best yard on the block if possible. There are minor patches of just dirt. So far I have been spreading grass seed, some organic fertilizer, and watering.

However, there is still a fair amount of brown spots. I want a nice flush green lawn, what’s the secret?
